Canine Good Citizen® ProgramSeveral times a year, HOT Dog Club administers the American Kennel Club's Canine Good Citizen® Test. Both members and non-members are eligible to participate in the test. We will be offering a CGC Test at the end of each of our CGC classes. Check our CALENDAR for the dates of the next CGC Class and test. You do not have to be enrolled in the class to participate in the test. Registration and testing will be on a first come, first serve basis for non-class participants. The Canine Good Citizen® Test (CGC) is an American Kennel Club (AKC) certified program that tests how a dog reacts to real situations they encounter in their daily life. The purpose of the CGC Test is to recognize dogs, who, because of their owner’s training, can be relied upon to behave well at home, in public places, and in the presence of other dogs. The ten (10) steps in the CGC certification test are:
Since the program began in 1989, CGC™ has been considered an “award,” meaning that it has not been listed on a dog’s title record. As a result of frequent, ongoing requests from dog owners and instructors for AKC to recognize CGC as a title, dog owners now have the option of having CGC added to their dog’s title record and appear as a part of the dog’s titled name. Those who have already earned their CGC may apply to have it added to their dog's titles. For more information visit the AKC's website. As of January 1, 2013, Canine Good Citizen® owners have the option of adding CGC as an official AKC title that can appear on the title records of dogs registered or listed with AKC. Dog owners who complete the process of registering their CGC pass with the AKC may list the suffix “CGC” after the dog’s name. This requires an additional fee paid directly to the AKC. Dogs are evaluated by members of the HOT Dog Club. a Houston area training club promoting the sport of dog obedience training. CGC participants are evaluated on a pass/fail basis. To pass the CGC test, your dog must pass all 10 items of the test. You are allowed to talk to your dog during testing and you may offer praise and encouragement. Food can not be used as a reward during testing. All tests must be performed on-leash and dogs must wear well fitting buckle or slip collars made of leather, fabric, or chain. Special training collars such as pinch or head collars are not acceptable. You should bring a brush to the test for the grooming exercise. Tests are held at our training site. There is a $10.00 fee for each dog tested and the entire examination takes approximately 20 minutes per dog to complete. Visit the AKC's website for more information about the Canine Good Citizen® Test. |
